Better camera, Nikon or Canon?

I just got stationed in Guantanamo, and the scenery is actually beautiful. The wildlife is amazing! I wanted to get into photography, but I am completely clueless as to what I need to buy. I was thinking between Nikon or Canon, and get the best deal for a good price. I'll be mainly outdoors, if that even matters. Suggestions?
