How to Add a Belt to a Dress

We will study how to add a waistline or permanent belt to a dress that does not have a defined waist already.
Necessary Things: dress, balancing fabric for belt, scissors, measuring tape, sewing machine, thread that matches fabric, buttons, pins
(1). Measure your ribcage just under your bra and add two inches for seams. Cut the complementary fabric to that length (32 inches in my case) and three inches wide.
(2). Fold one of the long side’s fabric over 1/2 inch and iron it down. Repeat for the other long side and the two short sides.
(3). Sew all around the edges of the belt with a zigzag stitch to tack down the raw edges.
(4). The belt is pinned onto the dress. Put your dress on and position the belt around your ribcage right under your bra. Have a friend help you pin it to the dress, starting at the side seam and going around the front to the other side seam. Make sure the right side of the belt is facing out. Don’t pin the belt to the back of the dress. For accurateness of spacing you can gauge down from the armpit of the dress to make sure the belt is even on both sides.
(5). Sew the belt onto the dress. Start at one side seam and follow as closely as you can to the edge of the belt, following around the top, then down to the bottom of the belt at the other side seam, then back crossways to the first side seam and back up to your starting point. You have made a long thin rectangle with your thread tracing the front part of the belt.
(6). On the end of the belt, sew three loops just a little bigger than the buttons. On the other end of the belt, sew the three buttons.

Thanks! A great way to freshen up older dresses! I love to transform this women’s dress and create different looks, by simply adding the belt, which accentuates the waist while adding a pop of colour. -
